This study investigated the effects of near-infrared photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on patients with mild to moderately severe dementia or probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), who initially scored between 10 and 24 on the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE). The therapy involved using 810 nm, 10 Hz pulsed, light-emitting diode devices that delivered PBM both transcranially and intranasally, targeting key brain areas linked with AD. Over 12 weeks, five patients received weekly in-clinic and daily at-home treatments, showing significant improvements in cognitive functions, mood stability, sleep quality, and reduced behavioral issues, with no adverse effects noted. However, cognitive gains regressed during a 4-week post-treatment period. These results support the potential of PBM as an effective home treatment for dementia and AD, suggesting that further extensive studies are warranted.

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Treatment: Significant Improvements in Four Ex-Football Players with Possible Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

This study explored the use of transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) in former football players suffering from traumatic encephalopathy syndrome, possibly evolving into chronic traumatic encephalopathy, characterized by progressive cognitive and mood disturbances. Over a six-week period, subjects underwent red/near-infrared tPBM treatment thrice weekly. The study aimed to observe changes in cognition, behavior, mood, and brain connectivity through MRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Results showed significant improvements in cognitive tests and reductions in PTSD, depression, pain, and sleep disturbances shortly after treatment, especially in younger participants. These benefits correlated with increased connectivity in specific brain networks and higher levels of n-acetyl-aspartate in the anterior cingulate cortex, indicating enhanced mitochondrial function. However, some benefits regressed two months post-treatment, prompting a shift to home-based tPBM focused on specific brain regions, which again improved symptoms.

The findings suggest that tPBM could be an effective intervention for cognitive and mood symptoms in individuals with a history of significant head trauma, although further studies are needed to understand potential placebo effects and establish long-term efficacy.

A-25 Transcranial Photobiomodulation Treatment Effects In Former Athletes With Repetitive Head Hits

This proof-of-concept study evaluated the effectiveness of transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) in treating former athletes with a history of repetitive head injuries. The study involved 49 participants aged 18 to 65 years who underwent 8 weeks of tPBM treatment. Before and after the treatment, participants completed various assessments measuring depression, posttraumatic stress, adjustment issues, sleep quality, reaction time, and grip strength. Results showed significant improvements in psychiatric symptoms, sleep quality, reaction time, and grip strength post-treatment, although hand dexterity did not show significant changes. These findings suggest that tPBM could be beneficial in the neurorehabilitation of athletes affected by repetitive head impacts, warranting further research into its therapeutic effects.

This study presents the first documented case of PBM successfully improving symptoms of GWI in two veterans after 12 weeks of treatment.

Improvements in clinical signs of Parkinson’s disease using photobiomodulation: a prospective proofof-concept study

The abstract describes a study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on Parkinson’s disease (PD) symptoms. As PD incidence rises due to factors like aging populations and potential COVID-19 sequelae, novel treatments are explored. This proof-of-concept study involved 12 participants with idiopathic PD, divided into a treatment group and a waitlisted group, to determine PBM's impact on symptoms. The treatment combined transcranial, intranasal, neck, and abdominal PBM over 12 weeks. Participants were assessed on mobility, fine motor skills, balance, and cognition at various points, including after continued home treatment. The results showed significant improvements in all assessed areas, with many surpassing the minimal clinically important difference. This suggests that PBM could be a beneficial treatment for PD symptoms, with effects lasting up to a year with ongoing home treatment. The study supports further investigation in a larger randomized controlled trial.

Home-use Photobiomodulation Device Treatment Outcomes for COVID-19

In a randomized clinical trial, a home-use photobiomodulation (PBM) device was tested for treating COVID-19 symptoms. Out of 294 patients, 199 were analyzed for efficacy. The treatment involved 20-minute sessions twice daily for the first five days, followed by once daily for 30 days. Patients who began treatment within the first seven days of moderate-to-severe symptoms saw a significant three-day faster recovery compared to the control group. No deaths or hospitalizations occurred in the treatment group, contrasting with one death and three hospitalizations in the control group.
